Oh salty...  theres so much unpacking that needs to be done with what you said. I understand you alot more than you think man

Save yourself the time, there is nothing to "unpack"..... put down your whistles I'm done with you referees.

This post wasn't directed at you in any form or fashion, in fact I wasn't even thinking about you in the least while posting it. I typically don't put much value on "non-grinders" opinions, as I understand actions speak louder then words.  Hell, I know I wouldn't be anywhere near where I'm at without the knowledge I've  attained from the sheer amount of design grinding I've done.

If you wish to improve your own design skill/identity and have your opinions hold more weight with myself and others, I suggest you spend less time playing other "junk-food" games and more time in the forge.

That being said, shout out to the grinders out there, you my boys. Cuz we done it and done it again!

There are many routes to learning.  An approach used by one may be unfit for another.

The ideal scenario would be to understand every game at a very deep level.  This would provide a wide and well balanced perspective.

Both the approach of understanding 1 game in great depth, and the approach of understanding many games at a shallow level, have their shortcomings.  Which has more value is dependent upon the scenario in question.

Since this thread has basically devolved into something else entirely, allow me to bring it back by announcing that the game I've been working on lately just launched our demo! It's only the Tutorial level right now, but if you'd be as so kind as to wishlist it (even if you aren't planning on getting it or even if it's not your type of game. It really helps visibility because the steam algorithm is ass).

Disagree.

If you are constantly doing things like applying design philosophies from other games into your design you are not just doing that one thing and understanding it to a greater degree. I mean you are but you are also gaining knowledge about other games and their application in other environments. Which gives you a better understanding of how and why they work.

Of course, but if your ultimate goal in not to design levels for a specific game, or even a specific genre of game, the alternate approach may very well make more sense.

Stay tuned icyhot, there may or may be an update soon. lol jk idfk when there'll be an update or when there'll be public announcements of any progress past the beginning level. I can only basically talk about stuff that the lead has publicly talked about on the twitter's social media page. Anything else is a no-go.

I'm doing top-down paper designs, then blocking out the levels. The only thing that's currently in the demo build is revisions I did to the tutorial level. Those levels were done by the project lead Victor.

Been watching alot of world building videos lately, really interesting depending on how far you want to take it. If anyones interested here is an example

I've always wanted to build a world. I just haven't dedicated myself enough to thinking about landscapes, political/monetary/religious systems, etc. It's quite a tall order and not something anyone can do overnight. Nor will anything you make the first time be good. I guess passively watching these videos would be a good start to learning how to make one, I think I'm moreso worried about the workflow/methods of getting ideas into fruition.

I've used Wonderdraft a little to make very simple maps for DnD, but nothing too intense. I've also thought of using Houdini to scientifically populate worlds using mathematically driven systems to create those landscapes/peoples/etc. Quite the tall order, but I'm sure it would come out fantastic if done right.

I want to share my content with you.

For the last four years, I've been making maps in Halo 5 that were based upon maps I had done in the past. I eventually wasn't happy with them, and attempted to make what I thought were improvements on their layouts. I failed, and in a fit of depression, deleted them.

With the help and support of a bunch of Halo fans, I was able to make brand new maps for people to play on. Before I show my maps, I want to thank the following:

Sgt x Slaphead

Box Knows/ Box Rippin

Yeti For Hire

Certified Champ

MultiLockOn

xXandrith

SaltyKoalaBear/For Chub

purely fat

Xzamples

Cursed Lemon

Hard VVay

and yes, even HeX Reapers

I hope you enjoy my 2v2 maps.

Nice! Bookmarked all of them, and will give them a look if I ever get on Halo 5 again, lol.  Has Lonesome Fort been updated? I think I saw it like a year ago, but not sure if you've made any changes.

Also, would love to have you create threads for these (or 1 thread - Map Pack style) in the Projects Section. I'm always looking for a chance to get peoples maps more attention, but I'm limited in what I can do when a level doesn't have an official thread I can point people to, with pictures, download link, etc.  It's up to you obviously.
